ASW Elimination for 2017-2018 (sent on 7/11/17)

Greetings, ASW Stakeholders,

I’m writing to inform you that the Analysis of Student Work Process to assess growth for Advanced Placement, Arts Education, Healthful Living, International Baccalaureate, and World Language courses has been eliminated by legislative action (Session Law 2017-57. Section 7.23E.(a)) beginning with the 2017-18 school year.

This notification will likely come as bittersweet news to many of you. While much of your feedback indicates that the ASW process allowed many teachers to dig more deeply into their standards, engage in more reflective teaching practices, and receive the same “validation” as tested subject areas, I recognize that participating in the ASW process also pushed the boundaries of some individuals’ technological comfort zones and was a time-intensive endeavor.

Due to budget cuts to the Department of Public Instruction, the paid component of the 2016-17 review process ended on June 23. A small cadre of reviewers are reviewing the remaining Evidence Collections for CEU credit. We will review as many 2016-17 Evidence Collections as possible this summer. If we are not able to review collections at the same level as previous years, the final decision as to whether we release the 2016-17 results will be made by DPI leadership.

At this time, there are no plans to replace the ASW process. Teachers who formerly participated in the ASW process or locally developed plans will not have a growth measure moving forward. Teachers who participated in the ASW process will not receive school-level growth.

Thank you for your dedication in learning and implementing the ASW process over the past 4 years. The ASW process was one of continuous improvement, driven by your feedback and rigorous expectations for yourselves and your peers. To support you in continuing professional learning, many of the current ASW resources will remain available to you or be adapted and posted either on the ASW wikispace or specific content area wikispaces. ASW training materials are, at their core, about excellent instructional practices in our performance-based classrooms and we want to ensure your access to these helpful materials in the future.

Best wishes,
Jen DeNeal

2/7/17 TNL Access Restored

Greetings, ASW Stakeholders,

The TNL/NCEES system is currently being restored for all districts. Teachers should now be able to access their ASW plans to continue working on Semester 1 Student Selection and Evidence Upload.

The new deadline to complete Semester 1 Student Selection and Evidence Upload is Monday, February 13. The extended deadline provides an additional weekend and one additional workday to complete the Student Selection and Evidence Upload steps, which have been available since January 18.

The Semester 2 Class Validation, Class Selection, and Objective Selection steps will be available beginning Tuesday, February 14. Teachers on semesterly plans should complete those Semester 2 steps no later than February 28.

All deadlines have been updated on the 16-17 Timeline page of the ASW Wiki.

Best,
Jen DeNeal

2/6/17 TNL Temporarily Down

Good afternoon, ASW Stakeholders,

I have just received word that the Truenorthlogic System will be temporarily down due to problems with incorrect user data (wrong locations, incorrect administrator permissions) in the system.

These issues primarily impact the Educator Evaluation component of the system (not ASW), but the entire system will be temporarily down in order to facilitate the fastest possible fix. I will let you know as soon as the system is back online and will adjust the ASW deadlines as needed on the 16-17 Timeline Page of the ASW Wikispace.

Best,
Jen DeNeal

9.19.16 ASW Practice Schedule Validation

Good morning!
As you know, the window for the practice schedule validation begins today.

Overnight last night, TNL worked to upload all of your schedule information into the NCEES platform. As of this morning, the schedules are still updating. If you log in and see a long string of numbers after your class name instead of a course code, section number, term, and school code, simply log out and try again later today.

Here are a few important reminders about the practice schedule validation:
  • The data for the practice validation was pulled on September 8. Any changes made to your schedule in PowerSchool between September 8 and today will not show up in your Validate Class Schedule step. As long as your schedule information is currently correct in PowerSchool, it will be correct when we pull the data for the final schedule validation. The deadline to make schedule changes in PowerSchool for the final schedule validation is 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 30.
  • Double check to ensure you are on the correct plan type. All teachers will default to a Yearly plan, but your principal or TNL District Administrator can switch you to a Semesterly plan by following the directions listed on the ASW FAQ page (http://ncasw.ncdpi.wikispaces.net/FAQ) or by watching the screencast titled “Change an ASW Plan Type” posted on the Screencasts page of the ASW Wikispace (http://ncasw.ncdpi.wikispaces.net/Screencasts). Any changes made to plans during the practice validation will be reflected during the final validation in October.
  • Make sure courses with the same state course code have different section numbers so you can tell them apart from one another in the online platform.
  • If you teach multiple disciplines or subject areas, please validate your schedule according to the directions listed on the ASW FAQ (http://ncasw.ncdpi.wikispaces.net/FAQ).
  • I have updated and posted new screencasts with instructions for completing each step of the ASW process on the Screencasts Page of the ASW Wikispace (http://ncasw.ncdpi.wikispaces.net/Screencasts). If you need a refresher or reminder about how to complete the practice schedule validation, please refer to the updated screencast titled “Validate Class Schedule.”

Have a wonderful week!
